Alan Durant
Children's Writer

Alan is author of over 70 children’s books, including the award-winning ‘Billy Monster’s Daymare’. He knows it helps to get advice from experienced writers and is happy to share his knowledge.

Achievements

‘Billy Monster's Daymare’ won the Royal Mail Scottish Children's Book Award
‘Burger Boy’ won the Portsmouth Children's Picture Book Award
‘Dear Tooth Fairy’ was shortlisted for the Children's Book Award

Specialities

I am unusual in that I write across the age-ranges - for boys and girls - and on all kinds of subjects from fairies to football. My books range from picture books for the very young through to novels for teenagers. Among my most recent titles are Billy Monster's Daymare (Winner of the Royal Mail Scottish Children's Book Award), Burger Boy (Winner of the Portsmouth Children's Picture Book Award), Dear Tooth Fairy (shortlisted for the Children's Book Award), Game Boy (runner-up for the Nottingham and Portsmouth Children's Book Awards) and Flesh and Bones. As well as writing, I run regular workshops and courses in the UK for children and adults. In addition I worked in children's publishing for many years as an editor and copywriter, so I know a lot about the workings of the publishing industry. I am a member of the Society of Authors, the National Association of Writers in Education (NAWE), the National Association of Workshop Providers (NAWP) and the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI).

In his own words

Writing for children can be very rewarding but it certainly isn't easy - and getting published is harder still. Having the opportunity to talk with other writers and get the advice of experienced published authors is always helpful - it certainly helped me when I began my career as a children's book author over fifteen years ago. Through Greatvine, I am now offering this kind of help to others interested in writing stories and poems for children. As an award-wining writer of over seventy published books for children, I have a lot of expertise and experience to pass on.
