Osteopath Avni Trivedi provides some easy tips for maintaining a good posture.
Drink enough water; Water gives the turgidity or strength in living cells. Watch how a wilting plant springs back to life when watered to know how much of a difference it can make.
Enjoy what you are doing; minds and bodies are interrelated. Mental stress translates to tension in the body, which makes it harder to stand tall. By the same measure standing tall can give the instant impression of confidence.
Pay attention to your body; are you guilty of living in your head, endlessly planning and analysing? If so try to notice sensations in your body, which will make it easier to control where your body position is in space.
Breathe; we’re very fortunate that breathing has both conscious and unconscious control- thank god otherwise many of us would have turned blue a long time ago!
Use mobile devices sparingly; in the not too distant future we human beings may morph to having large heads, opposable thumbs and wasted limbs. We’re simply not designed to perform fine movements at close range for long.
Take up pilates, yoga or gyrotonic; all great ways to gain flexibility, strength, co-ordination and prevent injuries.
Think of a princess- even if you tell a 5 year old about walking like a princess they know how to stand erect and flow in their body
Shake it out; to relieve held tension and lighten your mood.
Align your spine; use the corner of a wall as a plumbline to line up your head, shoulders and lower back. Try coming back to this position regularly through the day.
Get rid of the forward head posture- it’s only useful for passing the finish line after a long race but not for long periods of time.
