Five Ways To Jump Start Your Personal Brand

Your personal brand is shaped by the by other people’s perception but you can do a great deal to make sure that you effectively communicate what you have to offer and that you are consistent and powerful in your self-presentation.

Here are some ideas on how to jump-start your personal brand, with some questions to help you get clear on where you are now.

1. Be authentic

Don’t pretend to be what you’re not – identify the skills that come naturally to you, the values you bring to work, and demonstrate that you are willing to learn.

  • Can you clearly express your values and skills?
  • Are you confident in expressing your views and opinions?
  • Do you have a clear idea of your professional goals?
  • Are you taking action on achieving your goals?
  • Have you shared your goals with others?

2. Value your professional ambition

Having ambition is not the same as having a big ego and we all benefit from goals to strive for. Also, being professionally ambitious is about wanting to excel as an individual not about crushing the competition!

3. Appearance matters

People do judge you on appearances – so make sure you present your best and most appropriate self. You may find that you need to do some work on this to make sure your appearance matches the image you want to project, while fitting with what is expected at work.

What is the first impression that you make with your overall appearance and dress?

  • Do you look the part for your role?
  • Does what you wear fit with the culture at work?
  • Are you well groomed?
  • Do you enter the room with confidence and ease?
  • Do you have confident body language?
  • Can you confidently shake hands?
  • Are you comfortable in maintaining eye contact?

4. Fly above the radar

Aim to do great work and take pride in what you do.

  • Are you open to new challenges?
  • Do you tell people about your successes?
  • Do you volunteer for high visibility roles?
  • Are you willing to take on extra responsibilities?
  • Are you willing to try new ways of doing things?

5. Say it loud and proud

You need to be confident in communicating your value to others and to make sure that you take the opportunity to give others a clear message about your strengths.

  • Can your concisely and confidently introduce yourself?
  • Can you present effectively in person?
  • Does the way you write demonstrate your full ability?
  • Do you plan and practice the key messages you want to communicate?
