Certified personal trainer and celebrity fitness consultant Melinda Nicci addresses your questions on keeping fit and staying healthy after you have had your baby.

The general rule is that you should wait for your six week check up, and get the all clear from your Doctor before you begin any exercise programme. If you gave birth naturally (vaginal delivery) providing you are no longer bleeding and that your stitches have healed, you can begin gentle walking after 5 weeks . If you had a C-section, it is advisable to wait at least 6 weeks, get your Doctors approval and make sure that your scar is healing well before you exercise.
Fitness doesn’t disappear overnight; therefore it will be easier to get back into shape if you were active and fit during your pregnancy. If not, start slowly and build up gradually. A thorough post natal programme will help you get results and safely and effectively target the right parts of your body.
Exercise will make you feel calm, energised, help you to sleep better and can help lessen the effects of the “baby blues.” Your programme should consist of balanced nutrition, effective exercises and motivation to make it happen. We all have unique needs and goals, so a tailor made solution is the most effective. Your results will be quicker if you are putting the effort into your healthy lifestyle and your family will reap the rewards for years. Be patient and don’t consider crash diets or vigorous exercise before your body has had a chance to heal. It can take up to 9 months for all your organs to get back into their old positions. Set your goals, start exercising and eating well as soon as you can, and you might just be back into your jeans sooner than you think!
