How to Have a Good Birth Experience

Midwife and hypnobirthing expert Eleanor Copp, give her top 10 tips to ensure you are in control of your birthing experience and helps elevate those anxieties.

  1. Go to the unit where you will be having your baby, make sure the vibe feels right. If it feels better, stay at home.

  2. Make sure your support people will love and protect you and say helpful things in labour.

  3. Stay positive and always talk to your baby in your head or out loud, it doesn’t matter.

  4. Do not worry about things you cannot change, focus instead on what you can do well.

  5. Go to some pregnancy yoga classes and learn to relax deeply as well as be flexible in your mind and body approach.

  6. Learn how you can be assertive, as this will help you to make any decisions you need to make and feel ok in the process.

  7. Once you feel confident your fears will reduce and you are more likely to have a smoother birth.

  8. Using the birthing pool in labour will really help you cope so make that a priority.

  9. If anyone offers you anything you haven’t asked for say no, it's their perception you need it, not yours.

  10. Breathing is your number one friend and fear your number one enemy, get support to get those two in balance.
