Stand Out Now - The Power Of Personal Branding At Work

Good news! You have a job which has the potential to move your career forward and you have the chance to standout from the crowd and make your mark.

But are you really making the most positive impact and what does it really take to stand out at work?

Of course, you need to be great at what you do but you also need:

  • to know what is expected from you – the full range of abilities and skills you need – not just to be effective in your current role but also the abilities and skills you need to be able to step up to the next level
  • to be able to recognise and communicate the value of what you bring to the organisation.

This can be described as personal branding.

One definition of a brand is that it is a promise and your personal brand is your biggest promise at work – it’s your promise to your colleagues, clients, your employer and yourself.

Your personal brand communicates:

  • what other people can rely on you to deliver both now and in the future,
  • who you are and what you stand for,
  • what you excel at,
  • and how you work with others.

But isn’t branding for just for big companies?

Not at all – through your personal brand you communicate your value. This is very powerful whether you are looking for promotion, or whether you are looking to extend your experience or responsibilities in other ways.

Your personal brand also helps you day to day because if people know who you are, what they can expect from you, and what you excel at, this helps you build your reputation in the workplace. It also helps you to extend your influence and impact beyond your closest colleagues to others at work.

A simple example is email. We all make decisions about whose email messages we read first. Once you have read the bosses’ and clients’ messages – whose do your read next? Do you open and respond to the emails sent by the people you know, like and trust? Do you filter value by name and subject line before deciding to read email messages? This is just one way in which your reputation can either open on close doors for you.

Whether you are interested in your personal brand or not – one thing is for sure – you already have one! So, if you’d like to get clear on what you are already saying about yourself complete the audit in Love it or Hate it - Know your Personal Brand!.
