Specialities
My training as a clinical psychologist means I can help you deal with any behavioural and emotional problems your children may experience - eating disorders, sleep disturbance, bedwetting and potty training, fears and phobias, bullying and depression. At the same time, because I learned how to help people of all ages, I can also help you work through the anxieties and feelings of inadequacy you may experience when your children are suffering.
That same clinical grounding means I'm familiar with a wide range of developmental disorders including autism and Asperger's syndrome, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and chronic illness.
My special interest is first and foremost to act as a supervisor for other therapists who use a practical problem solving approach. My focus with clients in my clinics is on both children directly--helping them learn to communicate well, to develop their creative abilities, to study effectively and overcome exam nerves - in short, to discover their own special talents and to reach their potential--and to work with parents who are interested in achieving those sorts of aims for their children. I'm also a trustee for Kidscape, a charity that helps children and their families learn how to deal with bullying.
In her own words
Stress is everywhere in our lives today. Whether it’s finding and keeping a job you enjoy, making a success of your relationships, or raising your children to be positive, happy people, you’ll almost certainly be feeling under pressure to ‘do well’ in at least one area of your life - probably more. And with so many demands on you, there are bound to be times when it can all feel too much, when you’d welcome some support and guidance.
I’d like to help if I can. I’m a chartered clinical psychologist with over 30 years experience working both privately and in the NHS. I’ve worked with people of all ages, people who are experiencing all sorts of problems. For a time I specialised in working with families, so relationships and child development are particularly central to my experience.
My approach to problem solving is a practical one. I firmly believe that any of us can improve our quality of life if we wish to—we only need the will to do so, the opportunity to look at our problems in a fresh way, and some guidance to get started sorting things out.
One of the most important things I’ve learned in my clinics is that whatever your current difficulties, you’re likely to be troubled by certain ‘core’ symptoms. These include disturbed sleep, the unpleasant symptoms of anxiety, difficulty organising yourself and setting priorities, and an inability to cheer up because you can’t remember the things that are still going well for you.
Therefore, I’ve written four short guides to help you overcome these core symptoms. Furthermore, because so many young people come to see me because they’re feeling stressed about doing well in exams, I’ll also be including a fifth guide that addresses this issue specifically. You can order any of these guides right here on the Greatvine website.
The tips and suggestions I offer in the guides will hopefully be enough to get you started, and you can then make the improvements you’re hoping to make in your life. But if you want more help - perhaps to shape my general suggestions so they target your problems more specifically - then why not give me a call?
