Specialities

Unlike many other literary consultants, I am actually working within the current children's publishing sector. This means that I have a detailed knowledge of market needs and, as a result, am particularly strong on targeting. The children's book market is complex and competitive and my sole aim is to give all my authors the 'best possible chance of publication'. In order to do this it’s vital for me to teach writers to not only write great texts, but also to be very aware of the market for which they’re writing. I am also strong on story structure and offer a unique template to assist with plotting techniques.

In her own words

In a recent survey, writing a children's book came out as one of the top 10 things people would most like to do. Through Greatvine I can help writers achieve that goal, giving them the best possible chance of publication, either by offering one-off advice or by working with an author on a book stage by stage. I currently run The Writers' Advice Centre for Children's Books - a unique consultancy service specifically for children's writers. However I also work directly for children's publishers - chiefly Puffin - which means that I am completely in touch with the ever-changing and fast-moving children's publishing market. This direct experience means that I can not only advise on writing techniques, but can also offer specific marketing advice in what is an extremely complex and competitive area. I handle all areas of children's fiction, from picture books for very young children, to much longer books for young adults. I can also advise on poetry and non-fiction.

Caller feedback

"“I can’t thank you enough for your encouragement. All I’ll say is that it’s a HUGE relief to hear that I’m not kidding myself. The fire in my belly is real and you’ve added a dose of rocket fuel!”"
London Lady

"“It was good to talk to you on the phone and find that you are still in your most helpful business. I can imagine that you are inundated. It’s a great service to be offering as, in my experience, preliminary advice like this is the key to eventual publication.”"
Truly Grateful

"“I really enjoyed our chat as I don’t always get the opportunity to discuss my children’s story writing. After the phone call my wife said to my children, ‘that’ll be it now. You won’t see your dad for three months as he’ll be on the computer writing’. How true!” "
Busy Dad
