An expert in sport and exercise psychology, Richard helps people find the right motivation to exercise and improve their lifestyles. He also works with businesses to reduce stress in the workplace.
• Increasing confidence and self-esteem • Increasing motivation and commitment • Decreasing anxiety and nerves • Increasing focus and improving attention • Managing transitions (to higher levels, to university, retirement) • Managing the journey through injury rehab • Untangling and understanding the complex web of factors that can affect performance and motivation • Choosing the best psychological strategy for an individual athlete, and separating the 'good advice' from the 'not so good' (AKA 'evidence-based practice')
I do not deal with issues of clinical psychology, but I can help to get you the best possible referral.
I’ve worked as a self-employed sport and exercise psychologist for seven years, helping athletes from a range of backgrounds, from adolescents to world champions, and in a wide range of sports including:
• Football
• Equestrians and one-day eventing
• Rugby union
• Rugby league
• Archery
• Tennis
• Athletics
• Golf
• Netball
• Hockey
• Cricket (including blind cricket)
• Gymnastics
• Trampolining
• Swimming
• Canoeing
• Indoor bowls
• Martial arts
• Orienteering
My role includes helping coaches include psychology as part of their coaching, and strive for motivation, confidence, focus, mental toughness, overcoming nerves, peak performance and maximum achievement.
I’m registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC), chartered by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and accredited by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES).
I also work in exercise and health, helping people find the right motivation to exercise and improve their lifestyle, as well as advising leisure centres and health centres about these issues. Finally, I work with businesses to reduce stress in the workplace, improve productivity and mentor future leaders. In short, my area is the 'psychology of excellence'.
Media appearances include on BBC Look North, Radio 5Live and several articles in the Lincolnshire Echo. The BPS database lists me as one of its media experts.
