Ruth is a consultant clinical psychologist with many years experience in working with children and families. Her particular expertise is helping people who’ve been affected by a trauma that they’re finding it hard to recover from.
I'm an expert who specialises in:
Hello, I am Dr Ruth Armstrong and I help children, young people and their families recover from trauma. I can also help with a range of other emotional and behavioural difficulties such as anxiety, depression/unhappiness, phobias and bedwetting. Other areas of difficulty for which I can provide expert advice and assistance are separating and single parenting, behaviour issues, bonding and attachment, confidence and self-esteem, childhood development, education issues, bullying, eating issues such as meals and fussy eating, sleep problems, bereavement and loss, and stress management. I also have expertise in the assessment and management of learning difficulties. I have been practicing as a qualified and registered UK Clinical Psychologist for many years and have been at Consultant level since 1996. I have an extensive background as an Expert Witness within my own successful independent Harley Street practice. Throughout my work I have helped hundreds of families and I can now provide you with my specialist advice and support over the telephone here at Greatvine.
I began my career as a High School teacher in Australia, enjoying seven years teaching before becoming a qualified psychologist. I have developed a specialist interest and extensive experience in providing assessments and psychological interventions for adults and young people recovering from trauma. In Australia I was a Training Consultant with the Australian Institute of Management; I held positions working in mental health with children and their families as well as establishing a successful independent practice before moving to the UK. Here, I have led NHS Child and Adolescent Clinical Psychology teams alongside developing my independent practice. Today, I am a very experienced provider of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) for children and adults suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). My experiences have encompassed working with ethnically and culturally diverse children and families. My theoretical approach is primarily cognitive behavioural theory, informed by psychoanalytic and systemic theory and practice. I can of course explain any terminology that you are not familiar with from my field.
Over the years, I have helped hundreds of families deal with the effects of traumatic events. In my work as an Expert Witness, I have drawn on my expertise in assessing parenting as well as my understanding of the effects of trauma and I have significant experience of cross-examination in the UK courts. I also support other Psychologists by providing life coaching, supervision and mentoring.
I am personally the mother of two and a grandmother of nine, including some wonderful foster and step grandchildren. I am here to help you and your family by giving you information and advice, and I look forward to your call at Greatvine. Kind regards,
Dr Ruth Armstrong
