Hello, I’m Suzanne Barber and I’m a Lactation Consultant, Midwife and Tongue-tie Divider specialist. I moved into midwifery some twenty years ago after working as a Registered nurse in emergency settings. Today I’m delighted to have helped thousands of mums to be and parents understand more about their options for the birth experience; breastfeeding; infant nutrition; and the type of help available for children with tongue tie. I’m here at Greatvine for advice and expert support so that you feel more empowered and inspired around your parenting choices.

Within midwifery I’ve worked in hospitals and the community, supporting women through pregnancy and birth, including home births. I’ve spent five years working in a Sure Start Children’s Centre, promoting healthy living and normal childbirth. My journey to becoming a Lactation Consultant was driven by personal success and failure with breastfeeding my own two daughters. In order to achieve the expertise and knowledge to really make a difference to others, I became a Board Certified Lactation Consultant in 2010. I have also developed a tongue tie division service within my current post as an Infant Feeding Specialist Midwife in the NHS. I regularly run my own independent clinics to support parents in areas where there is less adequate NHS provision. I train NHS staff, from the midwifery, medical staff to the support workers who have contact with women and babies. I am an appointed and active Supervisor of Midwives, ensuring that families benefit from evidenced based advice and support - and remain the focus for both NHS and independent midwives. Part of my work within this is advocating water births and promoting of normal, natural childbirth. My work with all these professionals aims to support the breastfeeding relationship and provide continuity of care.

I’m now also here at Greatvine to address all feeding problems; we’ll begin by focusing on a satisfying and empowering start to a breastfeeding relationship. I’m expert in resolving complex issues with babies up to six months and beyond.

Finally, I can provide the opportunity to reflect on birth experiences, and contribute to the understanding of why they deviate from expectations. I believe that knowledge and understanding help to put experiences into perspective and reduce the impact of disappointment.
